Please vote No on Measure J in November. The Rec and Park District is asking for $8.5 million for 30 years to build an aquatic center and a performing arts center. The performing arts center, which many would prefer over the aquatic center, will not be built for five years, yet we are being asked to pay for it now.
Who knows what could happen five years from now, how expensive the project could be then. If built, the plans are for the center to be located at the new community center site, not downtown, close to restaurants and shops.
Proponents of Measure J say that it will create local jobs, but as a public agency the Rec and Park District must award contracts to the lowest bidder, so there is no guarantee of this.
The District has $7.2 million on hand. Let them build one of the proposed facilities with that money. Show us that they can build and maintain it, then perhaps we can consider raising funds for another project.
Be sure to vote on Nov. 6. Vote No on Measure J.
