Incline soccer | Girls whip Whittell, win two straight

The Incline soccer teams steamrolled Whittell on the road last Thursday, while the girls defeated Sparks 1-0 on Tuesday and the boys lost 4-1.

The Highlanders originally were scheduled to host the Railroaders on Tuesday, but the game was moved to Sparks due to the weather conditions.

The last-minute change of venue, combined with a difficult practice situation the day before and some injuries and sickness, threw a kink in the girls' game. Playing a bit out of sync, according to head coach Tom Canino, they played Sparks to a scoreless draw through one half before Vanessa Andrade broke through in the 53rd minute with a goal assisted by Alondra Luna. It was all the offense the Highlanders needed in the 1-0 win.

The boys game was physical and evenly played early, with both teams going hard for the ball despite the cold weather. Sparks took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute on a penalty kick, which stood through the half.

Sparks came out strong in the second half, scoring another goal in the 45th minute. The Railroaders followed with another penalty kick in the 59th minute. They scored a final goal in the 67th minute to take a 4-0 lead.

Incline senior Kyle Reeves scored in the 73rd minute on an assist by Erick Rodriguez to end the scoring.

Last Thursday, both Incline teams walked over the host Warriors, as the girls won 7-1 and the boys 3-1.

In the girls game, Haley Derr put the Highlanders on the board with a goal assisted by Caitlyn May in the eighth minute. Andrade extended the lead to 2-0 in the 22nd minute, assisted by Katie Johnson, while Derr added another score on a direct kick in the 24th. Elise Nelson scored off an assist from Derr in the 33rd minute and Kerrie Tonking scored in the 36th minute on a rebounding corner kick, giving Incline a 5-0 lead at the half.

Nelson scored on an assist by Derr five minutes into the second half before Incline started to empty the bench. Whittell's Skylar Smith broke up the shutout with a goal in the 66th minute. Nelson then added one final goal in the 78th minute, assisted by Derr.

The boys game was not as close as the final score indicated.

Incline struck first when Reeves scored a goal in the 10th minute, assisted by Salvador Vargas. The rest of the first half remained scoreless, despite the Highlanders controlling play.

The Highlanders didn't waste any time in the second half, pushing the lead to 2-0 with a goal by Drew Bessette assisted by Reeves just one minute in. Reeves added to the lead in the 53rd minute, assisted by Rodriguez.

Whittell scored a goal in the 64th minute, after Incline had emptied its bench.

The Incline boys are 5-4 in Mount Rose League play and 10-8-1 overall. The girls are 5-4 in league and 14-6 overalls.

The Highlanders will host the Northern Division III/IV regional postseason tournament on Nov. 2-3. Check the NIAA website for seedings and brackets.
