North Tahoe soccer | Lakers' postseason berths undecided

North Tahoe was scheduled to host South Tahoe on Tuesday. The girls game was postponed. No information was available about the boys.

The Lakers play at Incline on Thursday.

Starting this season, for the first time ever North Tahoe and Incline will enter a separate small-schools postseason involving only the Divisions III and IV, despite playing against Division I-A schools in their competitive Mount Rose League pod.

The NIAA's power rankings system for the DIII/DIV tournaments is clearly a work in progress. The system used to determine the seedings somehow had the Incline and Whittell boys tied for the No. 1 seed as of Monday, with power rankings of 1.5 apiece (despite Incline defeating Whittell in both league meetings). With Incline's loss at Sparks on Tuesday, the Highlanders fell to a No. 2 seed behind Whittell.

The North Tahoe boys, meanwhile, are currently a No. 4 seed and are not guaranteed a playoff berth, while Yerington, which North Tahoe defeated 7-1, owns the No. 3 seed. North Tahoe has a power ranking of 1.06 to Yerington's 1.21. White Pine, which North Tahoe defeated 7-1 during the season, has a power ranking of 0.90. If White Pine beats Battle Mountain and Lowry and North Tahoe fails to win one of their final two games against South Tahoe and Incline, then White Pine would move into the No. 4 seed and the Lakers would be eliminated from the regional tournament.

On the girls side, Incline holds the top seed with a 1.78 power ranking, Whittell currently has the second seed with a ranking of 1.76, Pershing County is third at 1.42, North Tahoe is fourth at 1.29 and White Pine is fifth at 1.15. North Tahoe defeated Pershing County 2-0 and White Pine 5-0 during the regular season.

Incline will host the Northern Division III/IV tournament Nov. 2-3. Check the NIAA website for an updated bracket.
