Sass keeps campaign contribution lead

South Lake Tahoe City Councilmen Hal Cole and Bruce Grego have closed the campaign contribution gap in the race for two council seats, but challenger Austin Sass remains the most well funded of the council hopefuls.

The South Lake Tahoe City Clerk's Office released the second of two pre-election campaign disclosure forms in the five-person race Friday. The disclosures are the last to be filed before the Nov. 6 election.

Cole has received a total of $11,307 in donations. Between Oct. 1 and Oct. 20 Cole raised $4,050. Major donations include $2,500 from Tahoe Keys Marina, $500 each from retirees Peter Watkins and Judy Cefalu and $300 from South Lake Tahoe businessman Mike McKeen, according to Cole's filing.

Grego received a $500 donation from the Globin Building and $250 each from Resort Realty Services, Grant Wolf Inc., dentist Richard Hall and the Steven Kenninger Living Trust, according to his disclosure form.

Cole and Grego, as well as candidates JoAnn Conner and Clinton Schue, still trail Austin Sass in the amount of campaign contributions they have received.

Following donations of several thousand dollars from South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association and South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts during the last filing period, Sass received just $662 in donations in the first three weeks in October. A $100 donation from South Shore real estate agent Deb Howard is the only itemized donation to Sass' campaign listed on the filing. Donations of less than $100 over the course of a calendar year are not required to be individually listed on the form under California law. Sass has received a total of $12,750 in contributions to his campaign.

Candidate JoAnn Conner raised $425 in cash contributions and $725 in nonmonetary contributions during early October. Entertainer David Fabrizio contributed $500 in music for a Conner fundraiser, according to her filing. She has received a total of $2,130 in contributions for her campaign.

Schue has not filed a campaign disclosure form with the City Clerk's Office, according to Assistant City Clerk Ellen Palazzo. Candidates who raise less than $1,000 in a calendar year are not required to submit the filings.
