North Tahoe cross country | Noah McDermott, Laker boys claim regional championship

To no one's surprise, the North Tahoe boys followed up a dominant regular season with another beat-down at the Northern Division III regional championships in Reno this past Friday.

The Lakers swept the top four spots to easily capture the regional title with a low score of 23 points to runner-up Incline's 47. Sage Ridge was a distant third, with 102 points, followed by Sierra Lutheran with 113.

Also surprising no one, junior Noah McDermott claimed the individual regional title, posting a time of 17 minutes, 32 seconds over the 5-kilometer course at Rancho San Rafael Park.

Three of his teammates finished in a tight pack not far behind, as senior Patrick McElravey was second in 17:46 and juniors Shane Christian and Peter Holmes were third and fourth in 17:47 and 17:48, respectively.

Freshman Julien Bordes rounded out the Lakers' top five scores (the amount used for the team result) with a 13th-place finish in a time of 18:44. That gave the Lakers an average time of 17:56 to Incline's 18:15 and Sage Ridge's 19:18.

And that was without one of their top runners, Sean McDermott, who's injured.

After the North Tahoe foursome were Excel Christian's Zachary Hunt in fifth, posting a time of 17:52, Incline's Levi Dodge (sixth, 18:01), Sage Ridge's John Dewald (seventh, 18:07), and Incline's Josh Lewis (eighth, 18:08), Evan Vomund (ninth, 18:09) and Owen Graffis (10th, 18:09).

North Tahoe's Dominic Antonucci (22nd, 19:26) and Brandon Hackett (26th, 19:48) rounded out the Laker contingent.

A total of 68 boys raced from 10 schools. The top four teams advanced to the state championship, which is scheduled for Saturday in Boulder City.

Tara Gallant, meanwhile, had her own race to win.

Sporting pink shorts and shoes for breast cancer awareness month, the North Tahoe sophomore raced to a regional title in a winning time of 21:11 to Incline runner-up Stephanie Homola's 21:26.

Led by five top-10 finishes, Incline took the team title ahead of North Tahoe, with a low score of 24 points to the Lakers' 55. Sierra Lutheran was third with 75 points and Virginia City fourth with 133 to punch their tickets to state.

The Lakers had two top-10 finishes, as Gallant was followed by freshman teammate Sophia Tallarigo in fourth in a time of 22:00. North Tahoe senior Emily Nall was 12th in 23:12, sophomore Ingrid Roske was 16th in 24:15 and freshman Holly Lewis was 22nd in 25:12.

Incline freshman Hannah Laurie was third in 21:47, while Incline's Kate Ballan was fifth in 22:07, Haley Kennedy was sixth in 22:08 and Julia Golimbik was eighth in 22:19 for the Highlanders' top five.

Freshmen Kaya Williams (24th, 25:34) and Erica Backus (36th, 28:34) also raced for the Lakers.

A total of 53 girls and nine schools competed.
