North Tahoe Family Resource Center | Day of the Dead celebration announced

TAHOE, Calif. - It is said that once a year the dead reunite with the living ...

As we approach the time of year where the veil between life and death seems to be lifted by the spirit of Halloween, it is most appropriate to recognize the ancient tradition still honored and celebrated by many people around the world, particularly throughout Latin America. The Day of the Dead honors the beloved departed. Graves and altars are prepared and decorated with ofrendas, or offerings, such as candles, flowers, incense, special breads, trinkets, and treats loved by those no longer with us. Families gather and visit neighborhood friends to share stories all the while believing their beloved roam joyfully among them.

In honor of this magnificent homage to life and death, the North Tahoe Family Resource Center will host a Day of the Dead Party at Hacienda del Lago, 760 North Lake Blvd. in Tahoe City's Boatworks Mall on Friday, Nov. 2, 7 p.m.-2 a.m. Live music from Dysfunction Junction and DJN8tron will fill the air with sound, Day of the Dead art will fill the space with beauty, and local artisans will share their crafts with all. A live painting session by local artist Michael Heltebrake will inspire our own creative spirit as we decorate traditional sugar skulls and get our faces painted if desired.

Prizes for Best Makeup and Costume will be awarded along with killer raffle prizes from Hyatt Regency Stillwater Spa, Squaw Valley, Tahoe Dave's, A Day in Your Life Photography, and more.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and include a raffle ticket. They are available at New Moon in Truckee and Tahoe City, Tahoe Dave's in Tahoe City, Brockway Cafe and As You Wish in Kings Beach. All proceeds benefit the North Tahoe Family Resource Center.
