Obituary: Robert (Bob) Payne

Robert Payne passed away on Oct. 17, at Life Care in Reno, surrounded by his wife and three grown children. Born on Aug. 8, 1930 in Bakersfield, Calif., Bob grew up on various ranches where his mother bred and raised Arabian horses. In his youth, Bob was one of the last American cowboys, spending summers driving cattle throughout California. After spending two years in the Armed Forces, Bob managed part of a family-owned business, McMahan's Furniture Stores. He and his brother Pat sold the Orange County stores in 1974, and Bob decided to pursue a degree in history, which had been a long-time passion. He subsequently graduated magna cum laude from UC Irvine. The year 1979 brought big changes in the lives of Bob, wife Teresa, and their youngest child Jason when they traded ocean for mountains, selling their Laguna Beach home and moving to Incline Village. During the next several years, as Southern California housing spread into farm land, Bob worked with his brother to develop their mother's ranch in Chino, Calif. They planted more than 1,800 trees on the Payne Ranch, which ultimately became a premiere planned community in the area.Bob loved travel, photography, foreign films, reading the classics, skiing, Apple computers, and friends. He was a loving and faithful husband, father, and friend, along with having a unique sense of humor. A past president of Rotary, Bob gave impetus to the popular Rotary bench project, now enjoyed by both residents and visitors. These benches are a constant reminder of Bob's originality and leadership abilities.Bob is loved and remembered by his wife Teresa, brother Pat, daughters Athena and Kasandra, son Jason, and granddaughters Joia, Chiara, and Alice. His friends are invited to a secular celebration of Bob's life on Nov. 5, 11 a.m. at the Chateau. Those who would like to share a remembrance of Bob may tell their story. The family requests that in place of flowers, donations be made to either Compassion & Choices or Rotary of Incline Village.
