Volunteer pilots take 400 children to the skies this year

The Truckee-Tahoe Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, No. 1073, flew about 400 children this year thanks to the efforts of volunteers.

Volunteers included both pilots and ground personnel, who dedicated their time, resources, and aircraft to introduce local children to aviation. In strict accordance with EAA guidelines, no compensation is permitted for these flights and flights.

Children ages 8-17 who attended with their parents were given the opportunity to fly with local pilots. Additionally, Young Eagles met with Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger at Lake Tahoe Airport on Aug. 26 for a presentation to local children. Sullenberger gained fame by successfully landing U.S. Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River off Manhattan, New York City, on Jan. 15, 2009. All of the 155 passengers and crew aboard the aircraft survived.
