Truckee soccer | Boys slip by Fallon in regional semifinal

ELKO, Nev. -- It was a battle of two evenly matched teams, but in the end, the short-handed Fallon boys soccer team could not upset Truckee in a semifinal game of the Northern I-A regional tournament.

After the Greenwave lost a player due to a pair of yellow cards, the Wolverines were able to wear them down for a 1-0 win Friday at Adobe Middle School.

"They beat us a man up," said Fallon coach Nate Waite, who was disappointed in the officiating. "I'm really proud of the way my guys played. I felt our guys worked hard."

Nash McMullen scored the Wolverines lone goal. Jose Sarabia deflected the ball to McMullen, and the senior captain put the ball into the back of the net in the 64th minute.

Even with the win and spot to the state tournament locked up, Truckee coach Casey Eberhardt was not entirely thrilled with his team's play and gave a lot of credit to the Wave.

"Fallon played with a lot of heart," Eberhardt said. "I think they came out with more tempo. I thought we expected it to be an easy game and it wasn't."

Both teams had opportunities throughout the contest. Truckee had a chance to notch a goal in the early going with a direct kick just outside of the box. The Wolverines' Jesse Fereira, however, kicked it right into the Fallon wall, and the two went into halftime scoreless.

In the second half, Fallon's Chuy Lopez picked up a pair of yellow cards and was ejected from the game. The Greenwave were forced to play the remainder of the contest with just 10 players on the field.

"I felt the possession was quite even but feel a lot of the momentum was changed by fouls that were called," Waite said.

Fallon keeper Ian Foster made several nice saves to keep the game close.

While Fallons (13-9-5) season comes to end a win short of state, Truckee (24-2) advances to the regional final Saturday against Sparks at 10 a.m. The winner will take the top seed at state from the north, while the loser will have to play the southern champ in the state semifinals.
