Peak proposal gets council nod

The South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously approved a resolution supporting the designation of an unnamed peak at Lake Tahoe's North Shore as "Gold Star Peak." The proposal, initiated by Congressman Tom McClintock, will need approval from state and federal bodies on geographic names before becoming a reality. Tuesday's resolution was part of a process to garner local support.

The council also directed staff to look at options for a plaque at Lakeview Commons identifying the peak. At approximately $8,000, the plaque was a lower-cost option than a granite pedestal that had also been discussed.

City Manager Nancy Kerry told the council no money will be spent on the plaque until the peak is officially named. Outside funding may also be available for the plaque, Kerry said.
