Tahoe/Truckee residents vote down Measure J

TRUCKEE, Calif. - Truckee/Tahoe voters have defeated the Measure J performing arts center and aquatics center bond, according to unofficial election results posted early Wednesday.According to results as of 1:33 a.m. Wednesday, in which 140 of 140 precincts were counted, nearly 46 percent of local voters in Nevada County voted "no," while roughly 54 percent voted "yes." Also, out of just 5 precincts in Placer County, 114 residents voted "no," with 107 voting "yes."Measure J needed two-thirds combined majority of voters within the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District to pass.In a Wednesday morning interview, a spokesperson with the Nevada County Clerk's Office said no additional ballots have been counted since 1:33 a.m., and the number of unprocessed ballots in the county is not known at this time, and may not be known until late Thursday.Furthermore, there are roughly 20,000-30,000 lingering Placer County ballots to be counted, officials said early Wednesday.Regarding other Nevada County races, Patrick Flora won the two-year seat on the Truckee Town Council, defeating Denny Dickinson and Daryl Simms. For the two four-year town council seats, Alicia Barr was elected, as was incumbent Joan de Ryk Jones, edging Jamie Brimer.Incumbents Tom Van Berkem and Mary Hetherington will return for four more years on the Truckee Tahoe Airport District board; they'll be joined by newcomer Lisa Wallace. The trio ran on the same ticket this year and eared more votes in both Placer and Nevada County than challenger Greg Jellinek.Lastly, incumbents Jeff Bender and Joe Aguera will return for four more years on the Truckee Donner Public Utility District Board and will be joined by Bob Ellis.
