Outside Magazine tabs Squaw Valley as best North American ski resort

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. - Squaw Valley is the best ski resort in North America, Outside Magazine announced Monday.

According to the magazine, its staff spent months scoring and ranking dozens of resorts from California to Maine to British Columbia to Quebec to come up the ultimate cheat sheet for figuring out which mountains are right for you this snow season.

In the end, Squaw was named the very best, besting Vail Ski Resort and Whistler Blackcomb, which finished second and third, respectively.

The magazine touted Squaw's hosting of the 1960 Winter Olympics, the Tahoe region's famed 300 days of annual sunshine and an average snowfall of 450 inches as key factors in the decision. The magazine also gave kudos to the Olympic Valley resort for its smooth rental process and focus on safety, as well as highlighting the area's variety of apres ski options and the benefit of having the neighboring Resort at Squaw Creek.
