Incline High mountain bike team recruiting riders

An informational meeting about a cross-country mountain bike racing team for Incline High School students will be held at the IV Coffee Lab on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m.

Parents and students from Incline High are welcome to attend the meeting to learn more about the team, officially an IHS club, forming to compete in the Norcal High School League this spring.

Doug Bedient, head coach of the Incline High mountain bike team, will discuss the program, answer questions and provide information on team activities. Bedient recently attended the Norcal Leaders' Summit, qualifying him for Norcal ride leader certification. Weekly training will start in January; competitions, which take place on Sundays around Northern California from February to May.

"We'll focus on safe bike handling skills, fitness, setting goals, teamwork, wilderness stewardship and achieving your personal best," Bedient said. "It's a way to get high school kids outdoors, on their bikes and engaged in a lifelong sport the whole family can enjoy."

The Norcal high school cycling league, presently in its 12th year, is a self-governing, self-funded, self-supported non-profit program that partners with more than 50 teams from Northern California high schools.

Riders of all levels are welcome and encouraged to join. Parents are also encouraged to get involved.

"Everyone participates and no one gets cut from the team. It's all about doing your best, no matter how big or strong you are," Bedient said. "Both boys and girls work together to score points during races, and they get to train and race mountain bikes on awesome trails around Nevada and California."

Incline's mountain bike team will be seeking support from the local community through team sponsorship in the weeks to come to help offset some of the fees associated with league participation. To learn more about the team, fees or sponsorship opportunities, visit IHSMTB.org.
