Letter to the Editor: Was the Republican Party saved last Tuesday?

I believe that the Republican Party may have been saved by Tuesday's electoral outcomes.

The GOP - which I still claim as my party - was walking the plank of political irrelevancy up until this point. Reproductive rights (being against them), immigration demagoguery (self-deportation ... really? How quaint), mindless defense spending (I am unpatriotic, apparently, because I think we can do with 10 aircraft carrier groups instead of 11) and the suppression of individual liberty as represented by opposing the rights of certain citizens to marry whomever they choose are each representations of wrong way politics in the America of the 21st Century.

The loud and shrill voices of the GOP, up until this point, have shouted down thinking or expressions of belief that did not explicitly and precisely adhere to this tower of ideological babble. Poor Chris Christy; all he did was thank a guy for helping out his state's citizens in a time of unspeakable crisis and now he is, essentially, radioactive. The GOP has become like the poor souls on the show "Hoarders:" trapped by the accumulation of excessive, unimportant or misappropriated stuff.

Even a Republican house painter knows that you have to peel away the old paint before applying a new fresh coat.

So it may be with this past election that permission has been given to those who feel that deficit spending must be reversed, that our military can be better AND smaller (btw, I flipping LOVE drones and drone attacks), that individual liberty needs to be protected at the level of the individual in the here and now (I do not believe that when I have a scrambled egg for breakfast that I killed a chicken, in other words), and that we must foster an opportunity society for everyone - and government does not create opportunities, citizens do.

These are each lost hallmarks of the Republican Party. Maybe we can get back on track. And maybe, just maybe, the next President will be a Republican too, like me.
