It might be time to feed the meter.
After dropping discussions surrounding additional paid parking this spring, the South Lake Tahoe City Council will hear another proposal next week that could lead to more parking meters in the city.
The council will consider changes to the city's parking ordinances Tuesday. The changes would designate several new areas where the city could install parking meters.
A pilot program consisting of 18 parking spaces supported by three parking kiosks on Transit Way and Bellamy Court began in June 2011.
The latest proposal would focus on areas frequented by tourists and could include Lakeshore Boulevard from Stateline Avenue to Park Avenue, Ski Run Boulevard from Lake Tahoe Boulevard to Pioneer Trail and Venice Drive east of Tahoe Keys Boulevard.
Pasadena, Oakland, Sacramento, Nevada and Fresno avenues north of Lakeview Avenue, as well as the Regan Beach parking lot, are also suggested as possible parking meter zones.
Permit parking is also possible in neighborhoods surrounding the areas where parking meters are installed, according to community service officer Bob Albertazzi.
Similar proposals earlier this year drew criticism from residents and businesses near proposed metered or permit parking. During a February City Council meeting, Councilman Hal Cole said he was not opposed to additional paid parking, but was concerned the city had not received enough public input on the proposals to move forward. The council dropped discussions of additional paid parking in March.
The city has identified more paid parking as a way to generate additional revenue in strategic documents. Additional parking enforcement has also improved traffic flow, pedestrian and motorist safety and access to parking for disabled people, Albertazzi said in a staff report to the City Council.
If given initial approval by city Tuesday, the parking proposals would be back before the council for final approval in December.
The council meets starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Lake Tahoe Airport. The parking item is the last open session item on the agenda. The airport is located at 1901 Airport Road.
