Truckee man, 27, recovering after being shot by WCSO deputy

TRUCKEE, Calif. - A Truckee man's medical condition has been upgraded to stable after he was shot nine days ago by a Washoe County Sheriff's Office deputy, officials confirmed Monday.

Michael Nelson Heil, 27, of Truckee, was shot at about 3:48 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in the area of the Gold Ranch Casino, located at 350 Gold Ranch Road in Verdi, according to the Reno Police Department.

A preliminary investigation revealed an on-duty deputy "was involved in the shooting during the stop of a male subject," according to a press release issued Nov. 10 by Reno Police, and Heil was critically injured. The deputy was not harmed.

Heil is now in stable condition and is recovering at a "local hospital," police confirmed in a Monday afternoon statement in which Heil's name was released.

The deputy - whose name is not being released - has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation, according to the Nov. 10 release.

"This is a routine and normal occurrence in any case where an officer/deputy has discharged a firearm and one or more bullets strike a human being," the release reads.

Pursuant to Washoe County protocol, the investigation will be conducted by multiple law enforcement agencies, with Reno Police Department taking the lead. When the preliminary investigation is complete, it will be submitted to the Washoe County District Attorney's Office for an initial determination as to whether the shooting was justified under Nevada law.

"If the shooting initially appears justified, the deputy can be returned to duty, pending the completion of the ... investigation and a final determination as to justification," the release reads.

The press release does not include details of "the stop of a male subject" that led to the shooting, nor further explanation as to why the officer's name is being withheld or why it took nine days for Heil's name to be released. No further information will be released by Reno Police until completion of the preliminary review.

Verdi is located about 15 minutes east of Truckee, off Interstate 80 en route to Reno.
