Classical Christmas concerts on two nights at Incline Village

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Are you ready to be lifted into the holiday season in an inspiring way? Plan to attend the Sierra Nevada College Concert Choir winter concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 and Saturday, Dec. 1.

Vivaldi's "Gloria" is one of the most widely performed and recorded Italian Baroque pieces. Many sections of the Gloria are generally recognized. There is great energy in many of the choral pieces. The "Et in terra pax" (and peace on earth) is one of the most divinely beautiful pieces in the choral literature. A duet (Laudamus te) and three inventive solos fill out the Gloria. Soloists for this impressive work include Joy Strotz, Dave Pierce, Kevin Beiswenger, and Lorelei Van Peborgh.

"Misa Criolla" is an all together different experience. It is full of compelling dancing rhythms and vocal lines. The piece was written by Ariel Ramirez, Argentine composer and folk music scholar. It somehow manages to be sacred and raucous at the same time. Percussionists and guitarists from the SNC music department will add zest. Our favorite tenor, Kevin Beiswenger, will be doing the solo work for this piece, joined by Dave Pierce, of Squaw Valley fame. This is a rousing, festive, celebratory piece.

Other soloists who will be performing during the evening will include SNC junior, Bryce Bullins (Ave Maria); Bob McIver (Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas) Karen Colbert, Caroline Kaplan, Vikki Gallien, Claire Roberts, Josii Johnson, and Frances Hamilton and Natalie Dyjak (singing the breathtaking Pie Jesu by Andrew Lloyd Weber) Piano accompaniment will be provided by Katie Lauder and director Donna Axton.

The evening will end with our traditional "O Holy Night."

The SNC choir brings high quality musical productions to this community. The membership is drawn from Tahoe's north shore, Truckee, and Sierra Nevada College. Donna Axton is the musical director and conductor. Listening to the choir is a joy.
