Verizon collecting phones for soldiers

South Lake Tahoe and Wireless Stores Inc./Verizon Wireless and the nonprofit Cell Phones for Soldiers Inc. are asking South Lake Tahoe residents to help troops call home by donating gently used cellular phones.

Although the military landscape is ever changing, as many as 369,000 troops are serving in the U.S. military overseas around the world, according to a press release. By donating to Cell Phones for Soldiers, South Lake Tahoe residents can provide troops with a connection to loved ones back home.

Residents can donate phones at Verizon's South Lake Tahoe location, 2230 South Lake Tahoe Blvd. Donating a gently used phone helps get rid of ewaste and the money goes toward phone cards for soldiers to use to call home, manager Ty Strong said. Donated phones are not required to have been purchased from Verizon.
