Kirkwood, Heavenly open expanse of new terrain

On the heels of a winter storm that left four feet of snow in its wake, Kirkwood Mountain Resort is set to become the first resort in the Lake Tahoe region to open 100 percent of its terrain Saturday. Kirkwood plans to operate 11 lifts, accessing 2,300 skiable acres.

In addition to the chairs and trails, Timber Creek Base Area, home to Kirkwood's ski school, will make its debut for the 2012-13 season, offering all levels of lessons including both group and private lessons for 3-and 4-year-olds.

Heavenly also took advantage of the recent snowfall to add terrain on its California side.
