Lake Tahoe weather: Winter storm could bring foot of snow Wednesday

TAHOE/TRUCKEE - A winter weather advisory will be in effect for the greater Truckee/Tahoe region from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Snow is expected to increase late Tuesday and continue through Wednesday morning, and additional bands of snow are expected to develop across portions of the Tahoe Basin Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to NWS.

The storm should bring 4 to 8 inches of snow at lake level, with as much as a foot possible above 7,000 feet and in areas west of Highway 89. Wind gusts at lake level of 35 mph are possible, and 75 mph along mountain ridges.

"The heaviest snow is likely to occur during the Wednesday morning commute, producing snowfall rates around one inch per hour with poor visibility," according to the weather advisory. "Slick roads with chain controls are expected through Wednesday evening."

Below is a 7-day forecast for the region, according to www.noaa.gov.

Tuesday night: A 50 percent chance of snow after 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 30. Breezy, with a southwest wind 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Wednesday: Snow. High near 34. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Wednesday Night: Snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming northeast in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Thursday: A 20 percent chance of snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 32. Northeast wind 5 to 10 mph.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 22.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 32.

Friday Night: A slight chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27.

Saturday: A slight chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34.

Saturday Night: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 30.

Sunday: Snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33.

Sunday Night: A slight chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23.

Monday: A slight chance of snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 34.
