Letter to the editor: Jail should be congratulated for culinary program

I was very delighted to see the story on Jeanette Shippee and the culinary arts program at the county jail in Friday's Tahoe Daily Tribune.

For many years I have been one of the baked goods judges at the El Dorado County Fair.

I first met her several years ago when she showed up to the judging and sat in the back row, just smiling. After the judging, when I announced the winners of each category, her smile got bigger each time that she found that her students had won awards for their entries.

I talked with her afterward and she explained the program which I think is not only wonderful, but benefits both the students and society as a whole. And, take it from me, they do professional-quality work on their entries, which are always beautiful and delicious.

She is a modest lady who gives all the credit to her students, and she, the junior college and the sheriff should all be congratulated for this positive program for inmates.
