Dog gets its day, inks 'pawtographs'

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - Dogma for a Tahoe resident is to never worry about the time, keep a snow shovel handy, expect to see friends whenever visiting a grocery store and own a dog.

The final aspect of the doctrine can be enhanced with a book, "The Dog Lover's Guide to Lake Tahoe," which has been hard to find in recent years. However, a third edition has been printed and distribution begins with three book signings by author Susie Ramsey and cover model Hank, a handsome Bernese mountain dog with a broad white blaze from muzzle to top of the head.

Ramsey and Hank will be at Uncorked in Tahoe City from 6-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, and Saturday, Dec. 15 at two locations: from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dog Dog Cat in South Lake Tahoe and 5-6 p.m. in The Bookshelf at Truckee.

Hank will display a "Swiss kiss" and offer his "pawtograph," an ink-stamped impression of his foot.

"We figured that would be better for the floor of whatever place we were at," Ramsey said.

Previous editions of the book were published in 1999 and 2003. The latest includes updates of Tahoe businesses, hikes, places to swim and photographs.

Ramsey now resides in Boulder, Colo., where she publishes a newspaper. She also has brought back The Tahoe Dog, which will be published twice a year. The winter-spring 2013 edition has a skijoring feature and more articles, which are hardly doggerel.
