TRUCKEE, Calif. - The town of Truckee and Truckee Donner Senior Apartments property owners worked together to secure financing for much-needed upgrades to the facility.
According to town of Truckee Community Development Director John McLaughlin, the town put $250,000 of redevelopment funds toward the project, which included weatherization, siding replacement, concrete, handrails, newly painted interior halls and carpet.
"Grants Administrator Joann Anders spearheaded the project, and did so much to pull it together," said McLaughlin. Her work included securing a $800,000 low-interest, longterm loan from the USDA.
Don Lazorko of DML Construction, a general contractor out of Verdi, Nev., coordinated the project with 12-15 workers participating. "It was a real pleasure working with for the senior center," he said.
"It's like turning a sow's ear into a silk purse, it's super unreal," said resident Jesse Griffin, who threw a celebration party for the work crew, featuring cake, ice cream and incredible eats donated by Leticia Aguilar. The residents, who are senior citizens and those with disabilities on low or fixed incomes, appreciate the work was completed without a raise in rent, according to Griffin.
The work took place May 2012 through early fall. Resident onsite manager Candice Souza reported positive remarks from residents about the crew and how nice it looks.
"It's brighter, cleaner, and safer," said Griffin.
