Incline High School's We The People class moving on to Nevada finals

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Incline High School placed first at the Congressional District 2 We the People Competition on Saturday at the University of Nevada, Reno, ahead of Edward C. Reed Jr. High School (second) and Reno High School (third).

Incline will compete with the following schools in the state final competition on Feb. 2, 2013, at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas.

• Congressional District 1: Clark High School and Veterans Tribute High School

• Congressional District 3: Bishop Gorman High School and Basic High School

• Congressional District 4: Canyon Springs High School

"The State Bar of Nevada is very proud of how strong the 'We the People' program is growing throughout Nevada," said Kathleen Dickinson, Law-Related Education Coordinator for the State Bar of Nevada, in an email. We had 18 teams statewide this year which is more than we have ever had before. We appreciate all the support from the lawyers, alumni, teachers, parents and school districts."

The winner of the Feb. 2 event will represent Nevada in the state finals on April 25-30, 2013, in Arlington, Va.

During the 2011-12 school year, Milt Hyams' We The People class at Incline High won the state title, besting Reno and Bishop Gorman at the Feb. 4, 2012, event in Las Vegas.

It was the school's seventh state win in the past 12 years, and also served as the closest victory in the then-25-year history of "We The People" in Nevada, as the Highlanders beat Reno, 1,270 to 1,266.

Incline went on to compete in the national championship in late April of this year in Arlington and the Washington, D.C., area, winning an award for the highest score for the best non-finalist team from the Western region.
