Letter to the Editor: Canyon Springs - wrong place, wrong time

In light of the release of the prepared Draft Environmental Impact Report for the proposed Canyon Springs housing development on the eastern boundary of Truckee, I urge Truckee to be involved in the public processing of the project.

As an active member of the community and a homeowner in Glenshire, I wholeheartedly believe that should the development proceed at any scale, it will have irreversible and negative impacts on our neighborhood's open space, wildlife habitat, water quality, water supply, public access to open space and severely impact our home values in an already flooded real estate market and down-turned economy.

I support any and all efforts to challenge the developers to create a scaled down development or to withdraw the plan altogether. The Canyon Springs development is in the wrong place at the wrong time. I personally believe it is a more feasible plan to coordinate the developers' investments and plans farther into the center of Truckee, such as at the Railyard development area or existing build able commercial and residential areas.

It could further benefit both the developers and the community to dedicate the Canyon Springs site to public open space and focus their development funds and talents as infill in the heart of Truckee, not on the sensitive outskirts where the wildlife boundaries and property values are nebulous.

Let's help the developers shift their focus to the center of Truckee and reconsider development at Canyon Springs leaving it preserved as open space for the benefit of our entire community's natural resources and enjoyment.

Please stay informed on the public comment period for the Canyon Springs DEIR from Dec. 19, 2012, expiring March 1, 2013.
