North Tahoe basketball | Girls beat Silver Stage, boys' comeback falls short

The North Tahoe girls basketball team defeated Silver Stage 30-24 on the road Tuesday, while the boys fell short, 54-50, despite a fourth-quarter comeback.

"The first half we started out cold, and then by the time we realized we could beat them, it was too late," said Laker boys head coach Frank Wright.

The Lakers got off to a sluggish start and trailed by 12 at half. But they awoke in the second half, particularly late, outscoring Silver Stage 35-20 in the fourth quarter.

"We absolutely throttled them," Wright said of the fourth quarter. "We just didn't have enough time to finish the job."

North Tahoe senior forward Colin Spencer led the way with 22 points. Junior point guard Alex Tyler contributed 13 points and Mitchell Myers had 12.

Wright complimented the play of the McDermott brothers, Sean and Noah, and freshman Nick Joslin, who may soon find himself in the starting lineup if he keeps up the good work, the coach said.

"Nick Joslin is showing that he can play with the big boys," Wright said.

The Nighthawks improved to 7-2 with the win, with their only losses coming against Fernley and ROP. The Lakers are 3-6 overall.

"It's a learning process, but we're in a good place. The kids are really stepping up," Wright said. "We are becoming a very good team."

The North Tahoe girls managed to pull off their win with only six players total, and with one playing through a stomach illness.

After entering the half knotted at 6-6, North Tahoe junior center Taylor Briggs became sick during the break, said head coach Rick Buhler. But she took the court anyway for the second half, scoring six points in a gutsy performance, her coach said.

Senior guard Liz Buhler led the Lakers with 19 points, while sophomore forward Savannah App pulled down 20 rebounds.

The North Tahoe girls are now 4-4 on the year.

UP NEXT: Both North Tahoe teams are scheduled to play at Quincy on Friday. The Lakers return to action after the holiday break with home games against Coleville on Jan. 3.
