OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. - A 71-year-old Northern California man died Friday after hitting a tree while skiing at Squaw Valley, officials said.

The skier collided with a tree on the west face of KT-22 at about 11 a.m. Friday, according to a statement from Squaw Valley Public Relations Manager Amelia Richmond.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office identified the man Sunday as Theodore Stanley Sorensen of Auburn. According to various reports, Sorensen was an expert skier.

Sorensen was wearing a helmet, Richmond said. The resort did not release any further details on the incident.

In a Monday morning interview, a spokeswoman for PCSO said a coroner's report indicated Sorensen hit a patch of ice and lost control before striking the tree and hitting the left side of his head; CPR efforts were unsuccessful.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends," Richmond said. "The resort would like to thank the Squaw Valley Fire Department paramedics for assisting in the rescue efforts."
