Pine Nuts: History of America in 15 seconds

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - I should qualify this short history of America by confessing I get my information from peep stones. But, OK, start your watch.

Our founding fathers fought tyranny, yet here we are today with two political parties that eschew compromise and embrace tyranny. Could we please once again pursue a more perfect union?

There. That's the sum and total of it, 15 seconds by the watch.

The short answer is yes we can. And I'll tell you how.

The unspeakable school shooting that visited us this month served to unmask us, and we saw ourselves for the first time since perhaps World War II as one nation under God. We had our outer identities stripped away, and there we were, standing together as parents.

Along with our shock and dismay came an overwhelming communal connection to the parents of students at Sandy Hook. In this moment of unification, we understood in our hearts that we were more than citizens of any particular country, more than followers of any particular religion, more than members of any particular political party, we were parents, all.

Will this universal simpatico last? Or in 2013 will we silently slip back into our work clothes and begin posturing for political positions that serve our self-interests, as we are wont to do?

Our best collective self is now a bright flame that was ignited by a horrific communal loss. It is a flame that we cannot and must not allow to blow out. Our finest instincts as human beings are at the forefront and we need to nurture them by joining hands and hearts to prevent more future mass murders. Can we do it? Yes we can.

A grassroots political force of magnitude can break the gridlock in congress and provide us with a path toward public safety that will incite admiration and pride in place of more shame and sorrow.

Our system of checks and balances has grown long on checks and short on balances. We have got to address this matter in a calm, balanced, democratic way, not as Republicans, not as Democrats, but as parents.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is one political organization that has been working long and hard on this problem since 1974, when it was known as the "National Council to Control Handguns." We should get behind the Brady Campaign and provide the necessary support to effectively reduce gun violence in this great land of ours, and do it now, not next week, not next year, but now.

Personally, I'm a Second Amendment guy. I believe in it. "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

I also believe it follows that a person purchasing an assault weapon should be issued orders to report to Ft. Benning to maintain our well regulated militia. You love your assault weapon and Second Amendment? Welcome to Georgia.
