Mengia Katharina Obermüller, a resident in Tahoe City since 1965, was born on March 9, 1938 in Switzerland, she grew up in the St. Moritz. She died on Dec. 18, 2012 in Los Barriles, Baja California, Mexico.
In 1959 she came to New York City and worked at the Four Season Seagrams Building at the Brassery as a waitress. In 1965 she and her friend PeeWee moved to Homewood, Lake Tahoe. There she worked for over 35 years at the Swiss Lakewood Lodge until her retirement.
She met Henry Obermüller, co-owner of the Pfeiferhaus in Tahoe City, in 1972. They married in 1974 and had a wonderful life with lots of traveling all over the world. They spent the last 20 years between Tahoe and their second home in Los Barriles. Mengia loved her second home and the people around there and became totally involved in the local community. She had a special big heart for animals and started the Humane Society to help the local area deal with their animal problems.
She found hundreds of homes for abandoned dogs and cats. Mengia donated every free minute to help others and volunteered for many organizations.
Mengia was a member of the Tahoe Hiking Club "the Trampers" for 35 years. She was also very active with the "East Cape Guild, A.C. and the Catholic Church.
Mengia leaves behind her loving husband Henry with Paloma and Kitty; sisters Betty and Rosina with their families.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013 at the Catholic Church in Los Barriles. A celebration of life will held March 9, 2013 in Los Barriles at the casa Dondlinger.
