Sierra College Insights to present 'Emotional Intelligence: The other kind of smart'

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. - Sierra College Insights presents "Emotional Intelligence: The other kind of Smart" with Christopher Old at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8.

Emotional Intelligence (EI), the ability to recognize and control emotions, is a characteristic that affects our ability to succeed in all areas of life including personal relationships, careers or school.

During the Sierra College Insights presentation geared toward young adults and adults, Old will use small group activities to explore and discuss various components of emotional intelligence. The key components of EI include self and social awareness and self and relationship management. Teen, parents and grandparents are encouraged to attend together or on their own.

"Positive close personal relationships are one of the key ingredients to living a fulfilled life. When our closest relationships are going well, everything else seems a little easier; we feel happier, more productive and generally satisfied with life," said Old. "When our relationships are not going well it affects our ability to work well, to parent well, to feel happiness and live the life we want to live. Fun and challenging experiences during 'Emotional Intelligence: The other kind of Smart' will fuel our discussion and bring the concepts to life. We will explore ways to improve emotional intelligence and flourish."

Old teaches Personal Development and Psychology classes at Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee located at 11001 College Trail in Truckee (across from the Savemart shopping area). Like most Sierra College instructors, he brings real-world experience to the classroom. After eight years guiding whitewater rafting trips, he went to graduate school to focus on his passion: helping people identify and live their best life. Old earned a master's degree in mental health counseling and became a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist as well as National Certified Counselor. Today his practice includes Adventure Therapy, a combination of experiential activities and traditional counseling, to help people learn about themselves and improve their relationship through positive experiences with clear goals.

Dr. Kim Bateman, dean of Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee, is pleased to invite community members from teens to seniors to Sierra College Insights, an educational and interactive evening event series designed for inquisitive adults and teens.
