Pine Nuts: Saying thank you to the baker

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - In days not so long ago we used to pick up a loaf of bread at a bakery and thank the baker, whom we knew by name. Nowadays most of us pick up our bread at a grocery store and can only wonder at the baker's name. So I thought I might like to make a stab at thanking a baker for the bread we especially like in our family.

This particularly seductive bread, which my wife discovered at Whole Foods, boasts the fitting name, "Seeduction." So I Googled that name and began my search...

As good fortune and a good search engine would have it, there appeared a video supplied by the producer of Seeduction, whereupon a baker, with a nametag, "Linda," appeared to make the following claim...

"I love the act of making of bread. By eight o'clock in the morning we're pulling the bread out with that beautiful aroma and crackle. It has pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds, poppy seeds and mila seeds. It also contains molasses and honey which give it a little bit of sweetness ... delicious."

Well said, Ms. Linda, but now what exactly is a mila seed, anyway? I have never heard of a mila seed.

Come to find out, a mila seed is an anti-aging seed, and bless my soul if that's not exactly what I'm looking for in a bread. So straight away I went downstairs to the kitchen in search of the wrapper of that bread to see if I could find out anything more. Ponce de Leon here we come...

On the wrapper, I found an address, and was finally able to send a note of thanks to Ms. Linda and tell her how much we love her Seeduction bread.

Dear Ms. Linda,

Our family has come to love your bread and are all the healthier for it, but I particularly take to it because I feel younger with each passing loaf. I don't know if it's the mila seeds or the pumpkin seeds, and I don't really care, but I'm convinced if I keep on consuming Seeduction bread, I might just live to see Haley's Comet come around again ... thank you for putting so much care and consideration into your baking.

So now I no longer have to drive to Florida to drink from the fountain of Youth. In fact, I can schedule a marathon for November in the confidence of knowing I will be younger then, and have a fair chance of winning my age group. Nobody but me and Ms. Linda will be the wiser.

The moral of this story about bread is, sometimes when you take a moment to find out about a product or service with the objective in mind of properly thanking somebody, you might just stumble onto information that could add years to your life by reversing the aging process. In short, it never hurts to thank the baker.
