This past week Northern Nevada lost a football Icon, Coach Ken Dalton of the McQueen Lancers, to his battle against cancer at the age of 65. In 1982, I was a freshman at South Tahoe High. I remember driving to McQueen for a game, there was one road, and the rest was dirt. There were no houses, no stores, just dirt. I remember thinking, "who builds a school in the middle of no where?"
Coach Dalton went on to win 11 regional titles, and six state championships in his 27 years of coaching at McQueen. He is also responsible for the Northwest Community, no longer dirt roads but a thriving community with houses as far as the eye can see and a community believing in Lancer Pride.
If you ever played or coached against Dalton, chances are good that he beat you, and beat you bad. On the field he was a fierce competitor, off the field he was a mentor, husband, father, friend.
