INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Free preparation of federal and California tax returns is now available for households with income under $51,000. This service helps people to receive all of the tax credits they are entitled to, which may include an Earned Income Tax Credit of up to $5,891.
The IRS reports that about 20 percent of people eligible for the EITC did not claim it, potentially missing out on thousands of extra dollars in their federal income tax refunds. Last year, on average, the credit boosted refunds for eligible workers by $2,100.
Tax returns are prepared by IRS-certified volunteers under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program operated by Tahoe Family Solutions, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization providing low/no cost services to children and families living along the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.
"We want to ensure that local households get all of the tax credits available to them," said TFS Executive Director Robin Glasgow. "This helps the people who live and work here, and helps the local economy by keeping more resources in the community."
From Feb. 2 through April 13, appointments are available on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursdays from 3-7 p.m. All tax preparation sessions will be held at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-profit Center, 948 Incline Way. To make an appointment, call Tahoe Family Solutions at 775-298-0004.
VITA volunteers are also available to meet with local businesses and other organizations to provide information about the free tax preparation services for members or employees, and answer questions. If you would like to schedule a visit to your organization, contact Amy Guinan at the TFS offices at 775-298-0004 or via e-mail at email@example.com.
