Helene Marie Balsat died January 6, 2013, Reno, Nevada. She was 84.Helene was born November 10, 1928 in Fostoria, Ohio to the late Gustav and Bertha Balsat, the youngest of five children. She spent her childhood and early adulthood in Fostoria, graduating from Fostoria High School in 1946. She also lived in Phoenix, the Bay Area, and finally settling in Las Vegas to raise her daughter.She worked for Lawrence Livermore Laboratory for over thirty years with the majority of her time spent at the Nevada Test Site. While in Las Vegas she was an active member of Reformation Lutheran Church. After retiring, Helene followed her heart to Incline Village, at beautiful Lake Tahoe, to be near her granddaughters. Her greatest joy was to see her babies grow up into the strong women they are today.She is survived by her only child, Dr. Emily Smith of Incline Village; son-in-law, Dale E. Smith; her beloved granddaughters Taylor Helene and Alexa Jean; her twin sister, Helen Horner of Long Beach, CA; and her much loved nieces and nephews who filled her life with joy. She is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Gustav and Arthur Balsat; and her sister Ruth Soraghan.Helene lived for 35 years with Parkinson's disease and taught all of us much about courage and the importance on humor in the face of adversity. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research or the charity of your choice.A memorial service will be held Friday, January 11, 2013, at 4:00pm at the Village Presbyterian Church, 736 McCourry Blvd., Incline Village. A reception will follow at the home of Dale & Emily Smith.
