Program helps children explore world with pen and paper

You don't have to travel to explore the world, or at least that's the idea behind a new monthly program for children at the South Lake Tahoe Branch El Dorado County Library.

Educational consultant Lynne Brosch started the World Explorers' Club this year for children 10 to 14 years old to learn about other countries by corresponding with a pen pal.

"I would like them to expand their knowledge of what it's like to live in other countries. Learning more about the global exchange of ideas. I think this is the age to get beyond your own community," Brosch said.

The club is meant to teach members about other young people around the world, create international-themed art projects, meet foreign-exchange students and sample global cuisine.

Brosch, who has more than three decades of teaching experience, outlined logistical details during the first World Explorers' Club meeting that took place Tuesday. Future meetings will be held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 3:30 p.m., but only if 10 children or more sign up.

The World Explorers' Club appealed to Georgia Cabraera, 13, not only because of the international-learning aspect but also because it would give her the chance to write and receive letters.

"I think it would be cool to learn about other countries. And I still like writing letters," Cabraera said.

Brosch is still looking to enroll more children, but she's hopeful the program will reach the 10-student minimum. To sign up your child, email Brosch at lrugg1224@aol.com.

Bonnie Turnbull put her daughter's name down because she thought the World Explorers' Club filled a void in community education.

"It sounded really fun. I think it's a great opportunity for kids to connect with somewhere else in the world. I think the town would really benefit from more cultural activities," Turnbull said.
