Toccata's eighth winter season kicks off Saturday in Incline Village

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Here's a classic combination: White mountains, blue sky and a red violin.

Toccata, the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, begins its Winter MusicFest season on Saturday, featuring violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn, who will perform Prokofiev's Concerto in D major on the legendary red Stradivarius violin.

The season's kickoff also includes the nonprofit symphony chorus presenting the Gloria section of J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor, which features soloists Joy Strotz and Anna Helwing, soprano; Luidmilla Mullen, mezzo soprano; and Stuart Duke, baritone.

Here are the upcoming concerts:

• 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, in St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, 341 Village Blvd., Incline Village.

• 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, in St. Theresa Church, 1041 Lyons Ave., South Lake Tahoe.

• 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Trinity Church, 200 Island Ave., Reno.

Tickets are available at the door or online at www.ToccataTahoe.com. General admission to each concert is $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and $5 for students aged 19 to 23 with valid ID, and preferred seating is $40.

A grant from the Parasol Tahoe Foundation allows all youth under 19 years of age to be admitted free to all regular season concerts in 2013. All performances are supported by the Kling Family Foundation.

A special "soiree musicale" fundraiser to help defer costs for this concert series will take place in an elegant private South Lake Tahoe home at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18. Proceeds will also help fund Toccata's outreach program, "Discovering Classical Music in the Public Schools."

Admission to the soiree is $100. Wine, cheese, and exotic desserts are included. Joy Strotz, Liudmila Mullin and Irina Kasimova will perform Russian arias and Broadway tunes, accompanied by Donna Axton and David Brock. Pitcairn will perform as well.
