South Tahoe boys, girls split at Sparks

The South Tahoe basketball teams split their Mount Rose League games at Sparks on Friday, with the girls winning 53-16 and the boys dropping a 63-50 game.

For the girls, Bailey David had a game high 12 points, including two 3-pointers, and Ally King added 11. Kaila Griffis had seven, while Riley Chapman, Brooke King and Alisa Caro all had six.

"We put a lot of pressure on their ball handlers and caused some turnovers early on to give us momentum in the first half, and went into the break up 30-6," girls coach Mike Neiger said. "Our girls played good half-court defense which led to a lot of fast break opportunities tonight."

Riley Chapman pulled down 12 rebounds and had six steals. Ally was 5-of-9 shooting from the field to go along with five steals.

"It's nice to see we have plenty of players to step up on any given night and score," Neiger said.

The took an early 15-10 lead, but Sparks had regained a 32-25 advantage by half. The boys regained some momentum in the third, outscoring Sparks 17-14, but faltered in the fourth. Sparks outscored the Vikings 17-8 to close the game and secure the win.

Cale Backinger led the Vikings with 24 points, shooting 11-of-21. Brandon Cramer had 11, including three 3-pointers, and Kyante Wilson had seven and five boards.
