Incline High looks for second-straight We The People state title

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Six weeks after emerging victorious in a Nevada regional competition, a group of Incline High students is looking for its second straight We The People state title.

Incline High School's government class will compete Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas in the 2013 state competition. The winner will represent Nevada in the state finals on April 25-30, 2013, in Arlington, Va.

Incline placed first at the Congressional District 2 We the People Competition on Dec. 15 at the University of Nevada, Reno, ahead of Edward C. Reed Jr. High School and Reno High School. On Saturday, Incline will compete with the following schools:

• Congressional District 1: Clark High School and Veterans Tribute High School

• Congressional District 3: Bishop Gorman High School and Basic High School

• Congressional District 4: Canyon Springs High School

During the 2011-12 school year, Milt Hyams' We The People class at Incline High won the state title, besting Reno and Bishop Gorman at the Feb. 4, 2012, event in Las Vegas.

It was the school's seventh state win in the past 12 years, and also served as the closest victory in the then-25-year history of "We The People" in Nevada, as the Highlanders beat Reno, 1,270 to 1,266.

Incline went on to compete in the national championship in late April of this year in Arlington and the Washington, D.C., area, winning an award for the highest score for the best non-finalist team from the Western region.

Nationally, the We The People program is directed by the Center for Civic Education, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization. In Nevada, the program is sponsored by the State Bar of Nevada.
