Lady Warriors looking strong

The lady Warriors are coming together just in time for playoffs.

They didn't get the win Tuesday against Truckee, but they did play some of their best basketball so far this season. The Warriors minimized turnovers, stayed out of foul trouble a hung with a bigger school in a 33-38 loss at home.

"It's probably the best four quarters we've put together this season so far," coach Tom Esposito said. "Every time we meet a big school it seems to take us a whole half before we realize we can hang with them, but this time the girls were confident from the first jump all the way until the end."

Truckee maintained a slight edge through the game, 15-12 at halftime and 20-19 after the third, but the Warriors were never out.

The Wolverines' 18-14 fourth quarter gave them the win, but the five-point loss reflects huge strides for Whittell. Last time the two teams met, Truckee beat Whittell by 30 points.

Whittell spread the points among five players.

Amanda Harris turned in her usual standout performance with 15 points. Emily Harris had three points with 12 blocks. Tori Jimenez contributed eight points, and Jenny Shepack four.

Kenya Maltase had three, but it was her defense that kept the Warriors in the game. The freshman was on Truckee's top scorer, Sydnie English, who Maltase contained to 13 points from the floor.

"I think our defensive pressure on their high scorer, and slowing down the game and taking care of our mistakes was probably key to our game," Esposito said.

After the game, the girls talked about the low number of turnovers and fouls, 10 fouls total, were the big difference maker, Esposito said.

"They were able to put up a good showing so hopefully it's an indicator that everyone is gelling at the right time, right before playoffs," Esposito said.

The girls are now 8-13 overall and 1-6 in Mount Rose League play. Truckee improves to 11-7 overall and 7-1 in Mount Rose League play.

The girls travel to Sparks (1-12, 1-7) on Friday, but will be down three starters.
