Credit card "skimmer" found at gas station

South Lake Tahoe police are encouraging anyone who purchased gas at the pumps of the Safeway gas station using a credit card in February to check their statements for fraudulent activity after a "skimmer" was found at the business.

A skimmer is a device installed by an identity thief to steal credit card information.

"These devices are not easily detected, and there usually is not much consumers are able to do prevent this sort of identity theft," according to a Wednesday statement from police. "An Internet search will reveal several photographs of credit card skimmer devices."

Police began investigating a fraud report regarding the pumps at the gas station located at U.S. Highway 50 and Takela Drive on Wednesday.

"The investigation revealed that there is more than one victim, and we expect there may be others identified after they receive their credit card statements," according to the statement.

Police have confirmed there are no longer any skimming devices at the gas station pumps. They encourage anyone who believes they have been a victim of the fraud, or anyone with information about the suspect, to call police at 530-542-6100 and refer to case number 1302-0799. Secret Witness can also be reached at 530-541-6800.
