Letter to the Editor: Canyon Springs development? Really?

The time is nearing when the Truckee Planning Committee will evaluate the draft environment impact report (DEIR) on the Canyon Springs development project east of Glenshire, and either approve or disapprove the report. If disapproved, the DEIR must be amended or the project must be re-defined. This project currently adds 177 single residential lots and 8 affordable housing lots, which are designated as multi-family, the number of units per lot which has yet to be determined.

There are significant questions about the conclusions in the DEIR and the Planning Committee is currently taking comments and questions from the public, which must be addressed before a decision is made. I am strongly urging the public to get involved and attend meetings, as there will be impacts to Truckee traffic, intersections, wildlife, air and water quality, cultural resources, hazards and hazardous materials, transportation, geology, soils and seismicity.

The Town has repeatedly been asked to hold meetings at the Glenshire Elementary School so more people could attend than is possible at the Town Hall. To date, there has been no reply from the Planning Committee or Town Council.

I am involved in the Save Open Space Glenshire project, and concerned with the impacts of Canyon Springs and other developments around Truckee. I feel that big developers may be able to push their agenda due to influence and money, and we are in a "David and Goliath" scenario. There are already many developments around Truckee that are less than half way built out with residences and the "need" for more makes no sense.

The time is coming very soon when Truckee residences will have to decide whether they want to continue to have a mountain lifestyle and environment, or be surrounded by expensive developments and golf courses to the detriment of all that enticed people to live in Truckee. Please get involved and contact SOSG for more information!
