Tahoe health: Turn that frown upside down

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - I think we can all agree that the best mornings are the ones where you wake up feeling energized and excited for what the day will bring. But as great as starting the day off feeling happy and motivated is, it doesn't take much for someone or something to trigger a negative emotion leading to a bad mood or irritated mind state.

How can these triggers change your emotions so quickly and how do you maintain a positive outlook when this happens? I wanted to share ways to keep a positive state of mind so you can wake up each and every day feeling energized with a positive sense of self, ready to take on the day and combat all the negative forces that will undoubtedly come your way.

Work out

Whether it's going for a run or lifting weights in the gym, exercise is one of the most effective ways to add energy and a more positive outlook to your day. Burdened with stress and frustration, working out is the perfect opportunity to release pent up aggression. Even a quick 10-minute walk outside can be enough to clear your head and raise your endorphins.

Appreciate

A very effective way to become a more positive person and to enjoy life more is simply to develop a habit of appreciating more. At times we find ourselves complaining about little insignificant things in life.

It's important to take a step back to appreciate and be thankful for all that we have. In general, we tend to surround ourselves with positive uplifting people; therefore, becoming this type of person will not only improve your overall outlook on life but will attract more positive people into your life as well.

Music

Everyone responds to sound differently, but hearing your favorite music - whether it's Led Zeppelin or Fresh Aire - is instrumental when it comes to energizing, motivating, and relaxing you. Nothing is better than hearing your favorite song to put you in a great mood and take your mind off things, if only for a couple minutes.

Blue

Put on a blue shirt. Sounds strange, right? I read this suggestion online and was intrigued to try it out. Blue is naturally a relaxing color - which is why shrinks tell their patients to stare at the sky.

Interestingly, orange is the biggest irritant and red and purple suggest power. Therefore, if you wear blue, you are most likely to be relaxed and calm. Remember this next time you have a stressful day headed your way!

Me

Lastly, "me" time is vital when it comes to staying positive. Find your own special place to gather strength. Whether it's at the lake, on the beach, going for a drive or exercising, don't forget to give yourself some much needed love and appreciation. We focus too much on others at times, which is therapeutic in its own right, but I think we tend to forget how important we really are.

Remember, you ultimately decide how you react to life and how you live it. Charles Kingsley wrote, "The men whom I have seen succeed best in life have always been cheerful and hopeful men, who went about their business with a smile on their faces, and took the changes and chances of this mortal lifelike men, facing rough and smooth alike as it came."

Share with me what changes your mood positively.
