Free guided snowshoe hike with Tahoe Institute for Natural Science

TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Mountain Sports and Tahoe Institute for Natural Science will sponsor a free guided snowshoe hike on Saturday, March 2, at Tahoe Meadows. Take your snowshoes, poles and warm winter boots. Snowshoe rentals will be discounted to $10 for anyone participating in the hike.

The hike will start at 11 a.m. at Tahoe Meadows (near Mt. Rose Summit). Participants should meet at Tahoe Mountain Sports, 8331 North Lake Blvd., Kings Beach, at 10:30 a.m. If you need rental snowshoes, please arrive at 10 a.m. to pick up your gear. The guided hike is free, but all participants are asked to register at www.meetup.com/LakeTahoeOutdoorAdventureGroup. Anyone arriving from Incline Village or Reno, Nev. may meet at the Meadows.

Dr. Will Richardson will lead the hike and discuss natural history issues, namely how various animals and plants cope with the short days, heavy snows and freezing temperatures associated with winter in Tahoe. Will is the co-founder and co-executive director of the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS), a member-supported nonprofit organization seeking to advance the natural history, conservation, and ecosystem knowledge of the Tahoe region through science, education, and outreach, with a longterm goal of bringing a world-class interpretive nature center and educational facility to the Tahoe area. In the meantime, they engage in multiple science, education, and outreach programs to promote greater appreciation, understanding, and stewardship of the natural resources of the Tahoe region.

"Tahoe Mountain Sports is excited to partner with TINS because they bring a level of education and expertise to their work that is unparalleled in our region," said David Polivy, owner of Tahoe Mountain Sports. "As part of the TMS mission, we actively encourage our customers and friends to learn more about their surroundings in order to be the best stewards they can. Getting out on snowshoes in the winter is a great experience for anybody looking for a safe and non-technical way to enjoy the outdoors during winter."

Dr. Richardson said: "TINS is really excited to partner with TMS for this hike. They have a great staff, really know their stuff, and are great about promoting and sponsoring community events to help folks get out and enjoy Tahoe's natural environment. Also, Dave and his team have been really great to TINS since the beginning, sponsoring a fundraiser for us at the shop in December of 2011 ... We hope this will be the first of many co-sponsored TINS/TMS outings in the future!"

To register, visit www.meetup.com/LakeTahoeOutdoorAdventureGroup and RSVP for the meetup: Guided Snowshoe Hike at Tahoe Meadows; or send an email to info@tahoemountainsports.com with "Snowshoe Hike" in the subject line.
