Cobblestone Relay event a downtown Tahoe City success

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - The Tahoe City Winter Sports Park hosted the Cobblestone Relays on Saturday, Feb. 24, after an 11-year break. Seventy-plus racers sprinted around the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park trails and skied through the Cobblestone parking lot in downtown Tahoe City on a special trail prepared by Ulf Grigoleit.

"Spectators love this event, and it's a great thrill for the participants," said Doug Read, one of the event originators. "It gives you the feel of being in a small European ski town, right here in Tahoe City. We are excited to bring this event back to our community and provide great exposure to the fun of Nordic skiing."

Teams of three skied three non-consecutive laps each, a total of nine laps per team. Also added to the event were the Elite Sprints. These short, fast laps attracted several of the fastest local skiers and Junior National Champions.

The event concluded with a barbecue lunch and awards at the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park Day Lodge, located at the Tahoe City Golf Course Clubhouse.

"It was great to see the veterans of the Cobblestone Relay from years ago come out and race with the young kids in the community," said Kevin Murnane, event organizer. "It made for a fun event for everyone. We appreciate all the help that we received from local volunteers. We look forward to teaming up with the Cobblestone and hosting the event again next winter."

The Tahoe City Public Utility District, in partnership with Tahoe Cross Country Ski Area and Duncan Golf Management, opened the Tahoe City Golf Course to winter recreational activities through March 31, weather permitting, as part of a pilot program, according to the Tahoe City Downtown Association website www.visittahoecity.org.

The TCSP is open Friday through Monday, and is located at 251 North Lake Blvd. in Tahoe City. Call 530-583-1516 or visit www.tcsportspark.org for information about sledding, Nordic trail passes and rentals.
