Lake Tahoe weather: Winter storm could bring foot of snow by midweek

TAHOE/TRUCKEE - As much as a foot of snow is possible by Thursday of this week for the greater Tahoe/Truckee region, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A developing storm system in the Northeast Pacific is forecast to move into Northern California late Tuesday and drop into Western Nevada and the Sierra by early Wednesday, according to an NWS special weather statement Monday morning.

Winds are expected to increase across Northeast California and along the Sierra front late Tuesday afternoon, gusting up to 50 mph by early Tuesday evening.

Precipitation will move into the region by Tuesday night, then into Western Nevada Wednesday morning. Snow levels will fall to near lake level Tuesday night and to most Western Nevada valleys on Wednesday.

From Tuesday night through Thursday, a foot or more of snow is possible along the Sierra crest, with amounts of 6 and 12 inches possible at lake level. Accumulating snow could lead to travel delays in the Sierra Wednesday and Thursday.

This storm is still evolving, and specific forecast details could change between now and Wednesday, NWS reports. Stay tuned to www.noaa.gov for updated information.
