Obituary: James B. Devine

James B. Devine died March 4, 2014, due to complications with Alzheimer's Disease. He was 86.

James was born Sept. 13, 1926, to James and Mary Devine and raised in Medford, Mass. He volunteered at age 17 in the Navy and served in South Pacific on Destroyer Escort during World War II.

James graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in journalism. As a lifelong Red Sox fan, he worked as a sports writer until he was hired by American Airlines in the PR department in 1955 at its corporate headquarters in NYC. James helped to usher in the age of passenger jet travel. He moved his family in 1969 to Hawaii to oversee American Airlines' expansion to South Pacific destinations.

After retirement, he moved to San Francisco with his wife, Meg, to start photo development business. They started vacationing in Lake Tahoe in 1980, and they soon bought a residence in Incline Village. James lived here the past 30 years even after his beloved wife, Marguerite Clark Devine, died in 1999.

James Devine is survived by his sons, Kevin C. Devine and James A. Devine; daughters Carol Devine Rusley and Susan Devine Meredith; brother, John Devine; sister, Helen Devine; and grandchildren, Jack Rusley, Douglas Rusley, Kevin Rusley, Patrick Devine, Nicholas Devine, Maile Devine, Conor Devine and Tess Devine.

Funeral services will take place Friday, March 8, 2013, at 2 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Incline Village. A reception to follow at the church.
