Incline Nordic skiing | Vomund ninth, Kelley wins open division at state

The Incline High Nordic ski team wrapped up its season at the CNISSF State Championships at Auburn Ski Club this past Saturday.

The event was a same-day pursuit that began with a 3-kilometer, mass-start classic race. Two hours later, the skiers competed in a skate race, with the staggered starts based each skier's classic time.

Incline was represented by varsity skiers Evan Vomund and Brandon Herhusky and open-division (JV) skiers Meghan Kelley, Stephanie Homola, Owen Graffis and Gus Strotz.

Vomund, the team veteran as the only junior, led the way with a ninth-place finish in a time of 23:37.4, while also finishing third in the overall league standings. Herhusky, a freshman, did not compete because of an illness. He did, however, finish 11th in the league standings. North Tahoe's Patrick McElravey claimed the individual state title with a time of 22:21.0 and was fourth in the league standings.

"Our two varsity skiers provided great leadership to our team of new skiers throughout the season," said Incline coach Kathy Vomund.

Kelley captured the title in the open girls division and placed 19th overall, posting a time of 30:41.2, while Homola was sixth in the open girls division and 25th overall in 34:20.1. Kelley was second in the open league standings and Homola was 18th. Katrin Larusson of the Sugar Bowl Academy won the varsity girls race in 24:37.4.

In the open boys division, Graffis finished seventh, matching his seventh place in the league standings, and Strotz was unable to compete due to an illness.

"I'm so pleased with our team's performance and incredibly positive attitude," coach Vomund said. "Everyone was super supportive and it was truly a great season. With a team full of freshman and one junior, we have a great future."
