The Incline Village boys travel basketball team posted its first championship last weekend in a tournament held at the Hardwood Palace in Sacramento, beating the heavily favored Rockton ballers 38-26.
Coached by Jonathon Smith, Incline won two games on Saturday to reach the Sunday championship game against the local power team from nearby Rockton.
Incline set the tempo with a solid defensive effort that forced the home team into perimeter shooting while allowing nothing inside. The combination of tenacious defense by Incline and cold shooting from Rockton kept the game close until Incline pulled away in the third quarter.
Led by the all-around play of William Stranzel, who led Incline in scoring, and solid efforts from Eli Snyder and Ian Smith set the tone for the surprising upset.
The team has competed together for the past two years and is just now coming together. The team consists of seven sixth-graders ages 11 and 12 - Johnny Redfern, Ian Smith, Zack White, Liam Nolan-Bowers, Matthew Cornell, Paul Larson and Eli Snyder - one seventh-grader - William Stranzel - and one fifth-grader - 10-year-old Tyler Knight.
The team will continue to compete in tournament play through the spring and early summer traveling to Sacramento and Reno.
