Grant brings Muslim collection to Sierra Nevada College

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The Muslim Journeys Bookshelf collection will be available at Sierra Nevada College's Prim Library thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

A federal program created in 1965, the NEH provides funding to a variety of humanities programs in the U.S.

The Bookshelf includes 25 books, four films and other resources selected to help audiences in the United States become more familiar with the people, places, history, faith, and cultures of Muslims around the world and within the U.S.

The collection is intended to provide the American public with trustworthy and accessible resources about Muslim beliefs and practices and the cultural heritage associated with Islamic civilizations.

The Prim Library is one of only two libraries in Nevada and 841 libraries and state humanities councils throughout the U.S to receive this grant.

The Bookshelf was developed by the NEH and the American Library Association based on the advice of scholars, librarians and other public programming experts.

The Prim Library also will receive access for one year to Oxford University's Islamic Studies Online, a database of thousands of entries and articles about the Islamic world.

The Muslim Journeys Bookshelf is the first in a planned series of Bridging Cultures Bookshelves, all part of NEH's Bridging Cultures initiative. This initiative recognizes the role libraries play in fostering learning and conversation among community members. As part of the grant, the library will sponsor at least one public program that introduces the community to these resources.

A poetry reading featuring Middle Eastern poetry and a screening of one of the films is planned for later in the year.
