CHP beefs up patrols to combat aggressive driving on Highway 50

The California Highway Patrol, Valley Division will deploy additional officers on Highway 50 from South Lake Tahoe to Sacramento through Sunday in an effort to reduce the number traffic collisions attributed to aggressive driving, unsafe speed, unsafe passing, and improper turning movements along with other moving violations.

Additional anti-speed campaigns will take place through Sept. 30.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines aggressive driving as “when individuals commit a combination of moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property.”

Statistical data from the CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System showed that from January 2010 through May 2013, the most recent month for which final figures are available, there were 2,008 collisions as a result of various speed violations on Highway 50 from South Lake Tahoe through South Sacramento.

Those collisions resulted in the deaths of five people and injuries to 968 others.
